Use it with a 12" memory mattress. Bought it just in case anything gets spilled onto memory foam mattress, not sure how to clean that type of mattress. So far have not tested this.

Not one week after getting the new mattress and mattress pad, my old dog had an accident during the night. A BIG accident. Not one drop went through the pad to the mattress, and when washed, the pad looks brand new.
